Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast with half of the warmed water (110°F) and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare Butter Mixture: In a large bowl, place the thinly sliced unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and kosher salt. Pour the remaining warm water over the mixture and allow it to sit while the yeast activates.
  3. Combine Mixtures: After 5 minutes, whisk the butter mixture until it is somewhat combined. Then add the lightly beaten egg yolk and the activated yeast mixture to the bowl.
  4. Add Flour and Form Dough: Stir in the 1 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour until just incorporated, creating a soft dough.
  5. Prepare Baking Dish: Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of the melted butter to prevent sticking.
