4.9 from 114 reviews

Classic Cannoli Squares combine a creamy ricotta filling with a crispy, golden pie crust for a delicious twist on traditional cannoli. Topped with chocolate chips and a hint of cinnamon, these squares are perfect for dessert and easy to prepare with pre-made pie crusts.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cannoli Filling:

  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese (whole milk or low-fat)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (or coconut sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips (preferably dark)

For the Cannoli Crust:

  • 1 package (14 ounces) pre-made pie crusts (or homemade)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for sprinkling)

Optional Garnishes:

  • Chopped pistachios
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Extra chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and mini chocolate chips. Mix until the filling is smooth and well blended.
  2. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and allow it to fully preheat to ensure even baking.
  3. Roll Out the Pie Crust: Press one of the pie crusts evenly into the bottom of a 9×9-inch baking dish, creating a firm base for the filling.
  4. Add the Filling: Spread the prepared ricotta filling evenly over the pie crust in the baking dish, ensuring a smooth and even layer.
  5. Prepare the Top Crust: Roll out the second pie crust and gently place it over the filling. Seal the edges of the crusts together by pressing them firmly, then brush the top crust with the beaten egg for a glossy finish. Sprinkle the surface with sugar to add a slight crunch.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top crust is golden brown and crisp.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the baked cannoli squares from the oven and allow them to cool for at least 30 minutes. Once cooled, cut into squares and optionally garnish with chopped pistachios, maraschino cherries, or extra chocolate chips before serving.

Notes

  • Use whole milk ricotta for a creamier filling or low-fat ricotta for a lighter option.
  • Dark chocolate chips enhance the richness of the filling.
  • Make sure the oven is fully preheated before baking to avoid undercooked crust.
  • The egg wash helps the crust achieve a beautiful golden brown color and a slight shine.
  • Allow the squares to cool completely to ensure clean cuts and prevent the filling from oozing out.
  • Optional garnishes like pistachios and cherries add extra flavor and visual appeal.
